January Timed Mile

I did a times mile today just to see where I was.

Boom! I was pretty surprised by myself. I maintained about a 10:15 pace for half of it and then cranked it up to 9:45. I am hoping to add half a mile at this pace every week. But I want to do a timed mile once a month to see where I am.

Who knows maybe I will drop more than an hour off my marathon time by next year!

Redemption

After a disapointing showing at the 2013 marathon, I was more determined to make this my redemption year. See last year I attempted the goofy challenge (half on Saturday, full on Sunday). I did everything wrong and got swept at mile 14 of the full. They gave me a medal but it does not hang with my others, it's sits in a box to remind me not to give up.

So in May my sister and I starting talking about doing the marathon again and I enlisted her to help make me a training plan.

Training began in September and I tried to keep to it but by November I started slacking. Luckily my running friends rallied behind me and kept me motivated. With training complete I headed to Orlando this past weekend and finished with no pain might I add, almost an hour faster than in 2012.

Ok I lied about the pain, I did get some chaffing from my tank top and skirt but it isn't bad and I was able to do the parks the next day.

I will be posting a recap in another post because it deserves that. This was the best experience I could have asked for and I will never forget it. I mean I put three hours of work into a playlist I barely listened too and I did math while running to keep on pace!

WDW Minnie Mouse 10k

Well my first Disney race of 2014 is under my belt. I am happy it was the inaugur(u)al Minnie Mouse 10k (spelling is in honor of our bibs misspelling). I got on the first bus at Old Key West and started tweeting my friends in anticipation of seeing everyone!

We got to Epcot just after 4 and I had to book it to meet up with my #TeamRunDisney group. Something new is a security check before you enter the area. They check every bag including hydration and running belts. Don't worry the lines move fast and hopefully that trend will continue.

Once I met up with our group it was time to head to our Corral. Four of us headed to E and planned to take it slow. Two are doing the Dopey Challenge (four races four days) and I didn't want to push myself and be tired for my marathon.

My only complaint is that they had five corrals for 10,000 people and each start was 10 minutes apart. This was a long time to stand around for us in E and made the course congested for the first two miles.

Once we started, our group weaves in and out and tried to stay around a 13:30 pace. The first three miles are on the highway and there wasn't much entertainment, just one character stop, some music and video screen.

By mile 4 we were in Epcot and the characters were a plenty and the vibe was fun. We entered the world showcase and then left to go do a lap around the boardwalk. Mile 5 took us back into the park and the ending which didn't have many spectators.

We finished roughly around 1:25 with a 13:25 pace. Overall it was a fun race and flat course but it was very humid which made parts slippery. I would definitely encourage people to try this race out or sign up your tween kids who think the 5k is to easy.

Week 1 Check In

I made great effort to be active 30 minutes a day everyday and I failed on day seven. It was my own fault. I knew I needed to run in morning but I put it off to get extra sleep and then when night came I had to pack for my marathon and pick up a roommate from the airport. I had my heart on streaking the month (complete a mile a day) for the month. I have accepted my miss and made sure I got up this morning and completed my mile before I went to work since I am flying to Orlando tonight. So longest streak so far - 6 days Current streak - 1 day Wish me luck! I will post once I am in Orlando and pick up my bib and such from Walt Disney World. Also I am working on a recap for my first race of 2014 - New Years Race Half Marathon! Till Then e

New Year means New Goals

As I reflect upon 2013 I realize I did a lot. I quit my secure job to chase a dream and moved to the Los Angeles area. I got more involved with my sorority(chi omega) and fraternity(delta sigma pi). I went to movie premieres: Scary Movie 5, Star Trek, The Butler to name a few. I got to work on some great movies and music videos. I got a steady job at an animation company. And I decided to take control I my health. I started jogging more and joined local running clubs: Pasadena Pacers, Run with Us, A Runners Circle. And that led to me losing twenty pounds and participating in seven half marathons with a new PR of 2:39:49. I have made lots of new friends and reconnected with old.

So looking to 2014 I kept things simple.
1) Be active for 30 mins a day: I'm trying to streak for 2014, meaning run at least a mile a day.
2) Get my half marathon time to under 2:15 by September
3) Be more social. I tend to stay in a lot and I want to change that. So I will host a wine night, go to dive bars, and try to go on at least five dates.
4) Let the little stuff go. I tend to have OCD living with others because I am particular about stuff. I want to be better at not being annoyed all the time.
5) Further my career. If I'm going to win an Oscar I need to step it up.

Join me on my journey and hopefully I have some fun stories to share!

LONG BEACH INTERNATIONAL HALF MARATHON RECAP

This past weekend I participated in the 29th annual Long Beach International Half Marathon and let me tell you it was a fun weekend. I had the opportunity to run as part of TeamVW, and I have to say if you ever have the opportunity to sign up for a race through them, please do. My journey began Saturday at the EXPO. My big pet peeve with race weekends is having to pay for parking to go pick up my bib. I am not a big Expo shopper, so to pay $10 to be there less than an hour doesn't not seem like money well spent. However, Long Beach provided alternative parking ramps that wouldn't charge as much for those of us who weren't staying all day. That was the first sign I would like this race. When I arrived at the Expo center I knew that our route to the entrance had been changed thanks to the communication the race provided earlier that week on their facebook page. They also put out numerous signs to help us find the alternative route which led us around the back side of the center. Upon entering there was a security guard checking for large bags and such which has become the norm since Boston. Bib pick up was easy and fast and then it was time for me to pick up my TeamVW shirt. They had the shirt ready and then surprised me with a backpack and two extra shirts to give to my cheering crew! I was not expecting this and the backpack was put to use right away! After that it is on to shirt pick ups. Again easy and fast and no problem with getting the right size. I then decided since I was paying for parking to enjoy my hour and peruse the Expo. What I noticed was that some of the best booths (KT Tape) were hidden around corners and had no one going there. This was good news to me since the taping line for KT was only two people.
I also noticed some vendors didn't show up, which is sad since their table was set up but just empty. I left the expo feeling good and excited for the race. I made sure I got home and ate a good pre-race meal and went to bed early, 8 pm, because my ride was coming at 4 am. My pre-race night ritual includes laying everything out, because sometimes my brain just doesn't want to function properly before 6 am.
So when I woke up it took my less than ten minutes to get ready. I grabbed my banana, made my ZipFizz drink and headed out the door. Getting to the race was again easy because we got there before major road closures. We were able to park right by the host hotel and made the quick walk to the starting line to cheer on the marathon runners. My only complaint was that there weren't many signs and volunteers there early enough to help the marathoners get to where they needed to be. But if you went to the information tent, they were very knowledgable and could point you in the right direction. Once the marathoners were off I had about 90 minutes to kill so I headed over to the runner's group tent area. The Pasadena Pacer's were leading a stretching group for the half marathoners which I took advantage of. Very glad I did. We then walked over to the corrals to get ready and boy was it crowded. The bathroom lines made a lot of people late to their corrals, and most ran out of toilet paper. Also the corrals needed more room since it wasn't assigned, everyone rushed to the front ones.

I was so excited for announcer Rudy Novotny and was excited when finally I crossed the start line. The course itself is great. Pretty flat, the hills are minor and at the beginning. There is enough space for the most part for runners. The hydration stations were great, but in the future I would like to see one table where they can refill bottles for those of us who run with them. The first four miles are a circle looping us back to the coast where we get on a running path. It was nice to run back past the start and have a big support group. Then the beach path stretches for what seems like forever with little entertainment and cheering. But once we get close to mile ten we turn back onto the road and the atmosphere changes and you get that second wind. I was excited that the ClifShot stop still had plenty of shots for us and grabbed mine. At the finish, I waved again to Rudy and said hi to Joe Taricani from the Marathon Show! I then made my way to get my medal and the volunteer put it around my neck congratulating me on my new PR (2:44:46). This race also marked my completion of the Beach Cities Challenge (Surf City, OC and Long Beach Half Marathon. I picked up the great medal and got my post race massage.
Overall this is a great race and I look forward to participating in the future. There are just a few tweaks: make sure the bathrooms have enough toilet paper, assign corrals, make sure mile markers are in correct spot (at least three were off by more than .10), have more massage volunteers.

So you had a bad day

That song was defiantly my theme yesterday. It was suppose to be a simple four miles at an 11:55 pace. Not to hard when my pace for the same distance was 11:40 on Wednesday. But that isn't what happened.

As you can see my pace was way off. Now a number of factors could be the reason and I learned the valuable lesson of pre run fueling, hydration and mental readiness.

I didn't do any of it. The day before I binged snacked and drank lots of soda. Then for dinner I just had a small potato. I don't recommend using this as a pre race meal ever!

I figured I would still be ok, it was only four miles. So I set my alarm and headed to bed. When I woke up though I just wasn't excited to run. It isn't like I ever am, but weekends have proven to be the hardest for me to get motivated. So I put it off.

When I finally did run I let my mind get the best of me when I say my pace for mile one. I figured I could never get back on track so my mindset wasn't positive. This led me to not caring what my time was. By mile four I just gave up and walked. My body didn't want to do it and my head wasn't in it. I finished but believe me I won't be making these mistake again.

I need to accept that every run won't be my best but not to give up, don't forget to hydrate and eat better.

I skipped my run today due to hear but I will be back at it Tuesday and I am more than ready for it!
